Keep your kids writing all summer long

If you homeschool according to the traditional schooling calendar, you probably spend time every summer worrying that your children will forget all of the information and study habits you spent all year long cultivating in them (which is one of the best reasons to homeschool year round, but that’s another entry!) Daily writing practice is one of the first things to go; during their formal “lessons,” your children probably spent a large portion of their day writing. However, it can be frustrating for parents to see pen and paper lay dormant all summer long.

The more your children write, the more proficient they will become. The ideal situation is for your children to write a little bit every single day, even during vacations. Of course, you can require them to write a page a day on an assigned topic or in a journal, but how can you get your children spontaneously writing and creating on their own?

One of the best ways is to let them start their own blog. There is something about seeing your words with their own place on the internet that lights the writing fire in even the most reluctant child. Allow them to start a blog about any topic they are interested in: movies, books, cars, horses, anything. You’ll even find that kids who initially buck against writing daily entries in a personal journal will all of a sudden be difficult to pry off the computer.

There are dozens of websites that allow free blog setup; all you need is an email address and the desire to write. Each site allows the would-be blogger to choose a from a large selection of stylish templates and to customize side-bars.

Here are some popular free blog set-up sites:
